Simple house heat loss model

I have made a web page you can use to investigate heat loss from your house. It looks at walls, windows, roof, floor, doors and ventilation losses, and shows you how much heat you are losing through each (in relative terms because I am not asking you the actual size of your house). You can then check how much you might save by adding insulation or draught proofing. The calculations are the same as I show in my book. You select the house shape and what sort of walls and windows you've got and so on. Do give it a go and tell me what you think: http://nicola.qeng-ho.org/housemodel/interactive.php.

After playing with this model, I think the next place we buy will be a modern terrace with filled cavity walls. We knew when we bought this house (large victorian detached) it would be expensive to heat but we didn't guess then how fast energy prices were going to rise. It has been quite a hassle insulating it throughout but definitely worth it. This picture shows the main bedroom when the builders were working on it.
